CREDITS AND REFERENCES

In general, developing CASMOFOR was based on a lot of previous works of many scientists. This refers to both model structure and all data. References to sources that were used to develop this version can be found below.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

CASMOFOR's development was mainly supported through various research grants over a number of years. These include by those from the Ministry of Environment and Rural Development, the Ministry of Environment and Water, the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Land Management, as well as CarboInvent (Multi-source inventory methods for quantifying carbon stocks and stock changes in European forests. REFERENCES IN THE MODEL

Previous versions

CASMOFOR is a fundamentally newly developed version of the CASMOR model (Somogyi, 1997. Mitigation Options in Forestry. In: Hungarian country studies team: Hungarian climate change country study. Systemexpert Consulting Ltd., Budapest.)

CASMOR was based on COMAP (Countries Studies Management Team, 1995. Guidance for Mitigation Analysis. Version 2.0. Washington, D.C., Energy Analysis Program, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories, Berkeley, California, USA.)

Data

Yield data

Yield data as used in CASMOFOR were based on yield tables for the most important Hungarian tree species, developed by the Department of Silviculture and Yield at the Hungarian Forest Research Institute. The references to the yield tables can be found below. In CASMOFOR, annual yield data are used, as opposed to the yield tables that only provide data for 5-year periods. Annual data were generated by interpolating between data points, and between the data for the youngest age and 0 by using the spline fitting (StatSoft, Inc. (2001). STATISTICA for Windows [Computer program manual]. Tulsa, OK: StatSoft, Inc., 2300 East 14th Street, Tulsa, OK 74104, phone: (918) 749-1119, fax: (918) 749-2217, email: info@statsoft.com, WEB: http://www.statsoft.com).

In the table below, all yield tables currently in use in Hungary are listed:

Basic wood density and biomass expansion factors

In Hungary, the volume tables (Sopp, 1974. or functions recently: Király, 1978, Sopp-Kolozs, 2001) contain data for the total aboveground volume of trees. The yield tables used in CASMOFOR were all constructed by using these volumes. Therefore, only wood density data are required to get (dry) biomass data from the volume data. The wood density data are taken from Somogyi, Z. 2008. A hazai erdők üvegház hatású gáz leltára az IPCC módszertana szerint. Erdészeti Kutatások.

Carbon content of wood

The IPCC 2006 default values (0.48 and 0.51 tC/t biomass for broadleaves and conifers, respectively) are used.

Silvicultural model

The silvicultural model as used in CASMOFOR is based on the "silvicultural model tables" (see below) developed at the Department of Silviculture and Yield of the Hungarian Forest Research Institute. From these tables, ages were identified when thinning must be made, then data in the yield tables were used to calculate thinning intensity, which is the ratio of thinning and stock volume at the age of thinning.

In the table below, all silvicultural model tables currently used in Hungary are listed. For species not listed here, expert judgement was used to set thinning ages. Most tables were published in 1984: Fatermesztési műszaki irányelvek IV. Erdőnevelés. MÉM Információs Központja, Budapest, 1984. All other tables were published together with the yield table (see above).
